Every time we design a custom engagement or wedding ring at Erebouni Jewellery, our clients ask the same question:
“Should I choose a handmade ring or a cast ring?”
Does the making process actually change the final quality, durability, and look of your jewellery? Let’s break down the differences between handmade vs. cast jewellery so you can make the right choice for your forever piece.
What is Handmade Jewellery?
When we create a piece of jewellery entirely by hand, we start with raw precious metal. A master jeweller bends, hammers, cuts, and files the metal into the desired shape.
The ring is built piece by piece—sometimes from just two parts, other times from many intricate components soldered together. Finally, the craftsman sets the diamonds or coloured gemstones into the hardened metal.
Key Benefits of Handmade Jewellery
- Maximum Durability: The process of hammering and rolling metal “work-hardens” it. Handmade jewellery is roughly 50% harder and stronger than cast jewellery, making it highly resistant to bending or scratching.
- Zero Porosity: Because the metal isn’t melted and poured into a mould, there are no hidden air pockets.
- 100% Unique: Every handmade piece is a bespoke work of art tailored exactly to you.
What is Cast Jewellery?
Most modern jewellery is created using casting, often driven by CAD (Computer-Aided Design). A jeweller designs the ring digitally and prints it as a 3D wax model.
This wax model goes through a multi-step factory process: it is encased in plaster, the wax is melted out in a kiln, and molten gold or platinum is poured into the remaining cavity to create the final metal ring.
Casting is an excellent tool for mass manufacturing, allowing jewellers to create fifty identical rings just as easily as one.
The Trade-offs of Cast Jewellery
- Lower Metal Density: Because the metal cools from a liquid state without being compressed or hammered, it remains softer than handmade metal.
- Risk of Porosity: Tiny oxygen bubbles can get trapped inside the cooling metal. This creates porosity (microscopic holes or pits that can weaken the structure of the ring).
While these tiny bubbles are usually invisible to the naked eye, they create structural weak points. When combined with the naturally softer metal of a casting, the ring is more prone to breaking, bending, or losing stones over time. Top-tier manufacturing techniques can minimise porosity, but they can never completely eliminate the risk.
Handmade vs. Casting: Cost, Time, and Longevity
Both custom handmade rings and high-quality cast rings typically take about 2 to 3 weeks to complete. While casting is often associated with cheaper mass production, handmade jewellery can actually be more cost-effective and faster in certain scenarios.
Take classic wedding bands, for example. Because these rings are worn every single day, they require maximum hardness and durability. A simple handmade wedding band can often be crafted by a skilled jeweller in just one day. If you are in a rush because your wedding day sneaked up on you, a handmade ring is actually much faster than waiting two weeks for a factory casting process!
